"We were able to get everyone playing time tonight which was our goal for our first competition," said Head Coach Prentice Lewis. "It was great to have so many alumni back. It's always fantastic to see everyone and their new babies. This game is a great tradition because it allows us to reconnect with our former athletes."
The varsity squad ran away with game one as they took a 25-10 decision. After getting warmed up, the Alumni put up a fight in game two, but the varsity team came away with the 25-20 win.
Game three was a different story as the Alumni found their groove. They were able to force a fourth game with a 25-12 victory. Game four went to the varsity squad as they took the match with a convincing 25-15 win.
Some notable performances from the varsity squad came from the freshman class. Jess Menden tallied 12 assists with three digs and an ace. Along with her eight kills, Joeckel pitched in with 11 digs to lead the team. Katelyn Blackwood racked up nine digs and two aces. Kourtney Edwards tallied nine kills and two blocks. Kristen Hester had six kills and Hannah Fort notched four.
On the alumni side, they were led by Ellen Rehme's nine kills and 10 digs. LeMeita Smith had eight kills in her first match as an alumnus. Calli Corley had 12 digs in her first alumni match, while Loren Barry tallied six digs and posted 13 assists. Hayley Harmon pitched in with five kills, while Anna Vaughn notched four. Allyson Lynch Pent led all blockers with three and Stacy Olson had four digs.
The Horned Frogs open the season on Aug. 29 when they host the Molten/Nike Invitational. The Frogs season begins at 7 p.m. against Louisiana Tech.
