A junior from Sugar Land, Texas, Hughes keyed a Horned Frog defense which limited the Lobos to just nine first downs and 186 yards of offense. When throwing out an 81-yard pass play, New Mexico was held to 105 yards on its other 54 snaps (1.9 yards per play).
Replacing graduated three-time first-team All-MWC selection Chase Ortiz, Hughes made just his second career start. His first start also came against New Mexico in last year's 37-0 victory over the Lobos.
Hughes totaled six tackles, including 1.5 for a loss with one sack. The former high school tailback also recorded his second career interception while adding a forced fumble and fumble recovery.
