Hughes tied a Mountain West Conference record with four sacks while forcing two fumbles. He totaled five tackles on the night in keying a TCU defense which held BYU to 23 yards rushing and 297 yards of total offense, well below its season average of 452.7 entering the contest.
Hughes tops the nation with 11 sacks this season while tying for the top spot in the country with four forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries. His 14 tackles for loss narrowly trail Penn State's Aaron Maybin (14.5) for the national lead.
A junior from Sugar Land, Texas, Hughes was a tailback at Austin High School. He rushed for 1,412 yards and 19 touchdowns as a senior while adding 215 yards receiving and three scores.
Texas quarterback Colt McCoy was named the Walter Camp Football Foundation National Offensive Player of the Week. McCoy completed 29-of-32 passes for 337 yards and two touchdowns while adding two rushing scores in a 56-31 win over Missouri.
