Horned Frogs Capture 67-63 Victory Over WMU

The TCU men's basketball team recorded a 67-63 victory over Western Michigan in the first round of the ESPN Charleston Classic on Friday (Nov. 14) at the Carolina First Arena in Charleston, S.C. Jim Christian recorded his first victory as the head coach of the Horned Frogs.

Jim Christian recorded his first victory as the head coach of the Horned Frogs, and it came against a familiar foe in Mid-American Conference-opponent Western Michigan. The TCU head men's basketball coach improved his record to 6-3 all-time against the Broncos.

With the victory - the Frogs improved to 1-0 on the season and have won their season opener in eight of the last nine seasons. Western Michigan dropped to 0-1 on the season.

The Broncos held the lead for the majority of the first half, but TCU was able to claim the advantage on the scoreboard at the 10:34 mark when John Ortiz (Cali, Colombia | Colby C.C.) posted an easy lay-in to break a 10-10 tie. After back-to-back jumpers by David Kool and Shawntes Gary - the Broncs reclaimed and were able to hold the lead for the remainder of the half with a three-point advantage at 30-27.

In the second half of action - the Frogs closed the scoring gap to one point at 30-29 following an Edvinas Ruzgas (Vilnius, Lithuania | Weatherford College) lay-in at the 19:48 mark. Ruzgas scored a team-high 16 points on 6-of-8 shooting, including 4-of-6 shooting from behind the three-point line, while playing in 37 minutes of action.

However - Western Michigan continued to hang onto the lead until Jason Ebie (Houston, Texas | Alief Elsik H.S.) connected on a lay-in with 9:54 remaining in the game to give TCU a 43-42 lead.

Over the next six minutes - the Frogs and Broncos would share for the tie on four occasions with TCU finally taking the lead for good on a three-pointer by Kevin Langford (Fort Worth, Texas | University of California). Langford's trey came at the 2:17 mark and gave the Frogs a 57-54 advantage. Langford notched 10 points on 4-of-6 shooting in addition to aiding the Frogs with four rebounds in 23 minutes of action.

The second big shot for the Frogs came on a three-pointer by TCU newcomer Ronnie Moss (Fort Worth, Texas | Christian Life Academy), who connected on a three-pointer to give the Purple and White a seven-point advantage at 62-55 with 57 seconds remaining in the game. Following the shot by Moss - the Frogs were able to hold onto the lead and cruise to a 67-63 victory.

For the Frogs - Moss added 11 points to go along with four assists and two rebounds in 24 minutes of action while Zvonko Buljan (Split, Croatia | Vincennes University) added 11 points in addition to four rebounds, four assists and one steal in 30 minutes of court time.

The Frogs connected on 49.0 percent (25-of-51) from the field against the Broncos - including 50.0 percent (14-of-28) in the second half of action. TCU held a strong advantage in the long-ball category as the Purple and White connected on seven three-pointers while holding Western Michigan to 2-of-18 from behind the arc.

TCU will return to action on Saturday (Nov. 15) in the second round of the ESPN Charleston Classic as the Frogs will be paired up against the winner of the Clemson/Hofstra Classic. Tip-off will be set for 8:00 p.m. Eastern Time.
