A 7-foot-1, 295-pound native of Latvia, Abele is playing 7 to 8 minutes a game behind fellow junior Darnell Turner, who has been an early target for Maryland. Currently Abele is averaging 4 points and 3 rebounds per game. His minutes could be going up in the near future as he recently he scored 17 points and grabbed 11 boards against the Hargrave Military Academy.
"He's come back from an injury he had before Christmas," Blue Ridge coach Bill Ramsey told the Daily Progress. "He's gotten himself into really good shape and is playing really aggressively and really well."
Currently Blue Ridge (16-1 overall) is the #1 ranked team in the state of Virginia. Various national rankings have the Barons on the edge of being in the Top 100.
Deemed by some in the Virginia area as a college project, Abele would provide the Frogs a 7-footer that they have not had in a long time.
"I am working hard to get my body stronger and I think when I am much stronger than I was last year," Abele told BigPurpleNation.com. "I need work a lot to get my body in the highest level."
Abele reports the strongest parts of his game are his post moves and mid-range jumper. Currently he has a 3.2 GPA.
