The Rice Stuff

Juan Fernandez scored 23 points, including the 1,000th of his career, as Temple's men's basketball team picked up a much-needed win at Rice, 77-70, on Monday night. The milestone and victory came one game after another senior guard, Ramone Moore, scored his 1,000th point – but that occurred in a 77-65 loss to Texas in which Temple held a second-half lead.

Monday looked like it could be a repeat as Rice, which trailed 36-23, after Fernandez hit a jumper with 3:45 left in the first half, scored the next 14 points to take a one-point lead 1:15 into the second half.

The lead grew to three before Fernandez answered with a three-pointer to tie the game at 42 and Ramone Moore gave Temple (7-3) the lead for good on a layup with 16:07 to play. With Temple holding a 49-47 lead, it went on an 8-0 run with Khalif Wyatt scoring four of his six points to push the advantage into double digits.

Rice (7-4) – also nicknamed the Owls – pulled within six in the closing minutes, but Fernandez's long three with the shot-clock winding down put Temple back up nine with 1:11 to play and clinched the victory.

Fernandez was 5-of-7 from beyond the arc on his way to his team-high, while Moore added 15 points and Aaron Brown contributed 10. Rahlir Hollis-Jefferson totaled nine points and 10 rebounds, and Temple earned a split of its two-game Texas swing. Rice was led by Lucas Kuiper's 16 points.

Temple will return to the hardwood on Wednesday, Dec. 28 with a home game against Buffalo, just the third contest this year at the Liacouras Center.
