The Temple starting lineup is getting younger.

Temple head coach Matt Rhule said on Monday's American Athletic Conference coaches' call that freshman guards Brendan McGowan and Dion Dawkins, sophomore defensive tackle Matt Ioannidis and sophomore defensive end Nate Smith had moved into starting roles.

He also said sophomore middle linebacker Rob Dvoracek, who had a thumb injury to begin the season, would start over true freshman Jarred Alwan, sophomore Zach Hooks would step back in as starting tackle and true freshman P.J. Walker is the new backup quarterback.

The lineup turnover came after a bye week following a discouraging 30-29 loss to FCS Fordham dropped the Owls to 0-3 heading into this week's game at Idaho.

"We want to re-establish the effort we want to play with, and when you come out of a game where you don't think that happened, you want to emphasise that" said Rhule, who also noted tight end Romond Deloatch could miss the rest of the season with a knee injury, defensive end Sean Daniels is undergoing season-ending surgery for a sports hernia and Robbie Anderson would see snaps at wide receiver.. "We spent much of the bye week with the underclassmen and younger players and we're moving the program forward.

"I want to play the guys who play with the effort the program has been known for. Whoever plays will be committed to playing all-out, and if they're not, they're not going to play anymore."

No matter the result, Rhule's No. 1 priority at Idaho is seeing more effort.

"To be quite honest, this game is crucial to play to the level we should be playing," said Rhule. "I can't say I've been pleased with the effort the last two games. Whether we win or lose — and believe me I want to win — but I'm not concerned about that as much as I want us to play a certain way."
