ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Watch Coach Fran Dunphy's postgame press conference following Temple's 91-67 loss to top-ranked North Carolina in the 2015-16 season opener on Friday night at Alumni Hall on the campus of the U.S. Naval Academy.
Behind senior guard Devin Coleman's hot shooting, the Owls were tied with the Tar Heels, 34-34, with less than three minutes remaining in the first half. But UNC finished the first half on a 13-2 run, and pulled away in the last eight minutes of the game for the lopsided victory.
Coleman finished with 19 points in 21 minutes, before sitting out most of the second half with cramps. Freshman guard Levan Shawn Alston had a very nice debut with 12 points on 5 of 7 field goal shooting. Fellow freshman Trey Lowe had eight points, while senior Quenton DeCosey finished with 11 points. Junior point guard Josh Brown had five points, six assists, and two turnovers.
But the story of the game was North Carolina's dominant frontline. Kennedy Meeks had 25 points and 11 rebounds and Brice Johnson had 16 points and 10 rebounds. The Tar Heels compiled a 42-14 scoring advantage in the paint.
Temple sophomore Obi Enechionyia missed the game with an ankle sprain that he suffered in practice on Monday. Enechionyia said afterward that he hoped to be back when the Owls return to action in the Puerto Rico Tip-Off Tournament next week. The Owls will face Minnesota on Thursday.
