The Temple men's basketball team fell to its second-ranked team of the season Friday afternoon, losing to No. 22 Butler, 74-69, in the semifinal of the Puerto Rico Shootout.
The Owls will face a third ranked team when they meet No. 16 Utah in the third-place game at 5:30 ET Sunday. The Utes were upset by Miami, 90-66, in their semifinal to fall to 3-1 on the season.
Temple, which won its tournament opener against Minnesota after losing the first game of the season to No. 1 North Carolina, jumped out to a 12-point lead in the first half against the Bulldogs, but it didn't last. Butler rallied to take a 35-31 lead at the break.
Butler kept the Owls at bay in the second half as they closed to five with the ball and about two minutes to play but came up empty on a couple chances to make it a one-possession game.
Temple senior swingman Quenton DeCosey had one of the best games of his career with 24 points and 10 rebounds and Jaylen Bond added 13 points and 13 rebounds. Josh Brown added 12 points and Devin Coleman 10 for the Owls.
