Lady Vols tip off tonight

A Lady Vol strength this season is expected to be depth, but that won't be on display Tuesday in the exhibition game against Carson-Newman as several players are sidelined due to injury, need for rest or violating team policy. Seven were definite to play, and Pat Summitt may stagger the two out for rule violations, so as not to overtax the minutes of the ones available.

Pat Summitt said final personnel decisions, including the starting lineup, would be set Tuesday after she meets with her staff. Summitt also will need to meet with Jenny Moshak, the team's chief of sports medicine, to get a game day determination of the players who have been injured or resting assorted issues.

Alyssia Brewer, a junior forward, is definitely out. She had Achilles tendon surgery on Sept. 10 and although ahead of schedule – she did dribbling drills on the sideline Monday – her estimated return is some time in December.

Lauren Avant, a freshman guard, has missed more than a week of practice while recovering from a nerve contusion in her right hand. Avant was able to shoot Monday – she also did some shooting Sunday on the team's off day – and did drills of throwing the ball into a bounce-back net, catching it and dribbling without issues. Summitt said it was possible that she could play Tuesday but not probable.

"I think we're probably going to aim for Sunday, but I feel much better now," Avant said.

Kelley Cain (hip) and Vicki Baugh (hamstring, IT band) have missed the past three practices – though Baugh went through shooting and post drills Monday – to settle down some minor issues so they don't become chronic ones early in the season. Both were likely to sit out Tuesday, and Summitt said she would ultimately defer to Moshak.

Sophomore guard Kamiko Williams and senior guard Angie Bjorklund will both miss one exhibition game for violation of team class policy during the fall semester. Violations can range from missing an entire class to being tardy by a few minutes. Summitt said that she might stagger the games – one will miss Tuesday while the other misses Sunday's game – to avoid having teammates have to play extended minutes but she would decide Tuesday.

Among the seven players definitely available for Tuesday's game, it is likely that Shekinna Stricklen, a junior guard/forward, will start at point guard, and Glory Johnson, a junior forward, will line up in the paint. They should be joined by sophomore guard/forward Taber Spani and junior guard/forward Alicia Manning, who are interchangeable at the small forward/power forward spots.

That leaves a spot to fill at shooting guard, which could go to freshman Meighan Simmons or senior Sydney Smallbone. With the coaches wanting to slide Stricklen away from the ball some – even posting her up of late – that likely means Simmons at tipoff since she can also slip over to the point spot. Junior guard Briana Bass is solidly in the rotation as the backup to Stricklen at point, and she can slide off the ball at times, too.

At any rate, all seven players should see extended minutes and especially if Williams and Bjorklund serve their one-game suspensions at the same time. Even if Avant, Baugh or Cain were cleared to play – and it did not seem probable as of Monday – they would likely play limited minutes.

Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. Eastern at Thompson-Boling Arena (Lady Vol Radio Network, webcast at: Lady Vols vs. Lady Eagles).

The Carson-Newman Lady Eagles, who hail from nearby Jefferson City and use the exhibition game against Tennessee as a recruiting tool, come to Knoxville with their own injured reserve list.

"We've not had 10 players full go since day one," Head Coach Dean Walsh said. "We're working our way through. It's set us back a little bit. We have to be patient with what we can do. We're trying to avoid any wear and tear injuries and play it smart. We're beat up right now.

"I want us to compete and execute what we're learning. These games are about having fun and playing on the biggest stages in the nation. At the same time, we're wanting to show our character and grit. It'll make us hungry for that first Division II game."

The Lady Eagles, who were picked to finish second in the South Athletic Conference, will also play exhibition games at North Carolina (Nov. 7) and Duke(Nov. 8).

Carson-Newman has been hit with injuries and illness. Junior guard Cassie Bates was hospitalized for several days because of illness. Junior guard Zoriah Williams is limited as she recovers from a torn ACL suffered last season. Freshman guard Rechelle Dye is also recovering from a knee injury but could be cleared Tuesday.

Walsh is expected to start: Candis Clear, a 5'3 sophomore guard from Memphis, Tenn.; Mandy Mendenhall, a 5'8 senior guard from Kingston Springs, Tenn.; Katlin Moore, a 5'7 senior guard from Fort Mill, S.C.; Shannon Depew, a 6'0 freshman forward from Newport, Tenn.; and Courdne Miles, a 5'11 sophomore forward from Burlington, N.C.

"Our first five is pretty healthy," Walsh said. "It's more about the injuries hitting our depth and that's adjusted our strategy. What it hurts the most is continuity and timing. We need to learn each other's nuances and that's been hard to do."

Tennessee should get much healthier this week. Avant, Cain and Baugh are all expected back at practice Wednesday – Stricklen, who had sat out two sessions last week with quad tendonitis was back on the court Monday – though how long the three participate in practice will depend on how various body parts react to the return.

Getting Avant back on the active list will help Tennessee, as she had looked solid in preseason, especially on defense. It was taking a charge in a scrimmage on Oct. 16 that injured her right hand. Avant wasn't sure when the injury occurred, so Moshak reviewed practice film and spotted the fall. Avant's hand absorbed her weight and that of the practice player.

"I hit my forearm and then all of my body weight and his body weight fell on my thumb," Avant said.

Summitt is eager to have Avant on the court but also has the long season ahead in mind.

"She's a true point guard, and we need that," Summitt said. "We definitely want to get her back as soon we can, but we've got to be smart about when she comes in."

Summitt was disappointed that the available roster took a hit for team rule violations,

"We're short right now on players," Summitt said.

Summitt was leaning towards staggering the suspensions because she doesn't want any player having to log 35 to 40 minutes a game in an exhibition.

"No, I don't," Summitt said. "We're sitting here thinking because of the injuries we've had, well, maybe we do one one game and one the other. I'll decide that (Tuesday). I don't want anybody (else) getting hurt. I'll figure it out. I just have to get over being mad. It is what it is."

Despite the low numbers, Tennessee will still look to increase the tempo and vary set plays with three-out, two-in formations in which the players make more reads with the ball.

"We've got to get up and down, there's no doubt," Summitt said.

When everyone is healthy, the Lady Vols will have a roster of 13, and Summitt indicated at Media Day on Monday that she intends to go as deep as she can. The return of Brewer will really be a boost as she provides a third big body inside to go with Cain and Baugh.

"Lyssi's ahead of schedule, and that's good news for us, because now, in the paint, you're talking three bigs, along with Glory and her quickness, jumping ability, and athleticism," Summitt said during her Media Day press conference. "From what Jenny has indicated to me, Lyssi is ahead of schedule and so we're just kind of keeping our fingers crossed and hoping sooner rather than later.

"Vicki's been getting a lot of reps in practice, but after she goes for maybe two days, then we give her a day off. Again, Jenny is monitoring her progress and taking her out when she feels like she needs to. We don't want to rush that."

Summitt and her players answered an assortment of questions Monday at the team's media day. A link of their quotes is available at: Lady Vols website, along with a photo gallery.

The themes Monday were the potential depth of the team if healthy, the veteran nature of the roster and the fact a national title is the acceptable outcome to the season.

"We're trying to get to a Final Four so we have our focus very narrow and we know what it is we want to accomplish," Summitt said. "We've had a hard time getting there (the last trip was in 2008) and so now I think they really feel like it's our turn. If we don't get to Indianapolis, then we're not going to be happy at all. That's our goal. We want to cut down nets.

"Do we have the size? Yes. Do we have the experience? Yes. So what do we have to do? We have to play very well together. We've got to make defense and rebounding a top priority for us. If we don't buy into that, then on a given night, we can go home. I think all of us know that, so right now the focus is, we know where we want to go. But it's daily improvement all the time that we're talking about and challenging them in practice."

"Angie and I, along with Kelley and Vicki have been here the same amount of time and we have all worked very hard and we're looking to bookend it, as we won the championships our first year and we want to win it as seniors," Smallbone said. "Going into this year we want to be leaders, we want to be positive throughout the whole season and maintain that and really bring the best out of our teammates every day."

Smallbone missed a couple of practice sessions last week because of a lengthy job interview process out of state. She said her experience as a Lady Vol helped her in a competitive corporate environment.

"I go into interviews really confident," Smallbone said. "I was talking to high-up executives and normally everyone else seems to be intimidated and I walked in there with confidence because I'm around (Summitt) every day. In a group setting and doing assessments, I feel I'm able to voice my opinions and be a leader and I feel that companies really like that."

Bjorklund added, "We're coming back with a national championship in mind. That is what we expect and that is what we are going to be working for every day and every game. The last couple years have just been a learning experience. It was very disappointing last year, but we have to learn from it and move on into this year."

MEDIA FUN DAY: The players answered basketball questions for about 45 minutes and then posed for the official team photo in their orange uniforms. It was more than an hour of basketball-specific stuff at Media Day, but they also – some said gladly – handled some offbeat questions that were two or three dribbles off court.

LAUREN AVANT

If you could guest star on TV, what show would you pick: Oh, my goodness, I love MTV. I'd be on ‘Jersey Shore,' because they are outrageously hilarious.

If you acquired a racehorse what would you name it: "I have some friends in Lexington, and they love the racetrack. My dog was named TommyHilfigerSnoopDoggyDogAvant, and I think that's pretty impressive. I think I was five, first grade. That would be a racehorse name.

If you became Professor Avant, what course would you teach on campus: I would teach an upper level kinesiology class. JMo (Jenny Moshak) teaches an awesome class in athletic training. I sat in on it once.

You are named ruler of the entire world and are now Queen Lauren. What is your first decree: My first decision is to try to make world peace, feed the hungry. (That's very altruistic and unselfish. That's good for a point guard.) You have to be.

If you go to a karaoke bar, what song would you nail: Wow. That's tough. The Star Spangled Banner. I can't sing it but I would like to try. I am pretty good at picking up lyrics and a cappella, but I am a pretty terrible singer.

If you could travel back in time to visit your 10-year-old self, what advice would you have for little Lauren: Take everything more seriously. Understand everything I was doing then is affecting me now. Be more careful. I have a bunch of scars from little nicks and stuff.

And while we have you here, what is up with your teammates mispronouncing your last name to make you sound French?: It's technically (right to say A-vaunt), but I say Avant (rhymes with A-slant), because I am American, not French. (Will they wear you down, as they say?) No, not at all."

And how excited are you and fellow freshman Meighan to finally debut on ‘The Summitt' court: Way past excited. Have you been following our countdown? (Yes, viewable on Tennessee Lady Vols Facebook.) We are way past excited.

We spent all weekend doing our homework for the next three days so we can go to sleep early (Monday night). We know we're going to be on a high (Tuesday) and definitely won't be able to do any homework then so we tried to get ahead. That's how excited we are.

BRIANA BASS

Bass listened as a teammate answered nearby and fired rapid-response answers when it was her turn.

If you could guest star on TV, what show would you pick: SpongeBob.

VICKI BAUGH

If you could guest star on TV, what show would you pick: I think they had a show on VH-1 that was women's rappers, and Missy Elliott was recognized on there and if that's a way to meet her I would like to guest star on that show. (And even though you don't acknowledge it, you can rap.) No!

If you acquired a racehorse what would you name it: If I had a racehorse, it's going to be a boy and he's going to be named TimmyTonga. I don't know why. It just goes together.

If you became Professor Baugh, what course would you teach on campus: I would like to teach culinary class. (Cooking? When I talked to you as a freshman, you could only make instant oatmeal in a microwave.) Oh, that is what I would be teaching. All my favorite foods, and it's a way to eat. I can make spaghetti and tacos just because all you have to do is the ground beef. And I would also teach instant oatmeal and eggs.

You are named ruler of the entire world and are now Queen Vicki. What is your first decree: Really? Ruler of the world I am? Wow, this is steep. Everyone in the world gets one vacation anywhere they want for free for a week. All paid. Everyone in the world gets one.

If you go to a karaoke bar, what song would you nail: Anything by Lyfe Jennings. I love Lyfe Jennings. I'm going to go with ‘It's Real.' (If you do a duet, which teammate comes on stage with you?) Do I have to choose a teammate or can I choose a manager? (Either one.) Ashley Smith. (A manager.) We know her as Anyhoo.

If you could travel back in time to visit your 10-year-old self, what advice would you have for little Vicki: You are awesome. You are the coolest little girl ever. Keep doing what you're doing. You're great.

ANGIE BJORKLUND

If you acquired a racehorse what would you name it: (Kelley: Slowski.) (What?) It is kind of an inside joke. We'll have to go with Slowski.

If you became Professor Bjorklund, what course would you teach on campus: (Kelley: How to Survive in Nature 420.) Hiking class, absolutely. (Kelley: How to climb a tree.) (Are you the outdoors type?) I am.

You are named ruler of the entire world and are now Queen Angie. What is your first decree: What? My gosh. Ruler of the whole world? I am so indecisive … . I took a mission trip to Honduras so I would take care of them. I want to go back there and help them again. (Kelley's idea for Angie: Everybody has to climb a tree.) What? (Do you climb trees?) They make fun of me. They have seen me climb trees before.

If you go to a karaoke bar, what song would you nail: ‘I Will Survive.' (Which Angie belted out much to the amusement of her teammates.) Heck, yeah. (Gloria Gaynor's song? It was released in the 1970s.) I don't know who it's by, but I would totally sing that song.

If you could travel back in time to visit your 10-year-old self, what advice would you have for little Lyssi: Ha-ha. Don't make your grandma mad. Budget your money when you get older. And make sure that you study as much as you possibly can and don't wait until the last minute.

She can't sing either. (She can rap, though.) No comment. (Do you have a song yet?) No, I am not good at these questions!

If you could travel back in time to visit your 10-year-old self, what advice would you have for little Kelley: What was I doing when I was 10? (It wasn't that long ago.) It feels like it. These years go by so fast. There is so much stuff that packs into these years. I barely remember five years ago. Keep pushing. Keep pushing.

OK, back to your TV show: Probably ‘The Game.' (That's what Meighan Simmons said.) She took mine. (That's OK, you can both be on it.) No, because she can't be on my show. I want my own show. I would say ‘Lost,' but I don't like being in nature. ‘FlashForward,' because you get to see stuff that happens in the future, even if it's good or bad.

If you could travel back in time to visit your 10-year-old self, what advice would you have for little Alicia: Enjoy your childhood while it lasts. (Did it go by fast?) It did. It's hard to believe I'm a junior in the program. When you're growing up it's just so carefree. I had a great childhood.
