Varsity 8s notches victory

Tennessee's Varsity 8+ shell, ranked 23rd in the USRowing/CRCA Varsity 8+ Coaches Poll, placed first in the Petite Final of the Jessop-Whittier Cup at the San Diego Crew Classic on Sunday. The Lady Vols did so in dramatic fashion, edging No. 24 Duke by .11 seconds in the 2000m race on Mission Bay.

The UT crew of junior Lizzie Brown (cox.), sophomore Kaitlin Bargreen, junior Nicole Bold, freshman Lauren Wells, sophomore Chelsea Pemberton, sophomore Dana Forbes, senior Kacey Montgomery, sophomore Melissa Dicerbo and junior Jessica Shreder clocked a time of 6:46.11, compared to Duke's 6:46.22.

The victory also marked the second time in two days that the Lady Vols have beaten No. 22 Minnesota, a team that defeated UT's Varsity 8+ by a half second on March 22 in Knoxville. The Golden Gophers placed fifth with a time of 6:51.48 in the Petite Final on Sunday. Other crews in the Petite Final at San Diego included Clemson in third (6:49.07), Wisconsin in fourth (6:51.05), Kansas State in sixth (6:55.20) and San Diego State in seventh 7:08.86.

Although Tennessee had previously competed in the San Diego Crew Classic, this trip marked the team's first appearance in the Jessop-Whittier Cup, which is the regatta's toughest division. In 2001, the Lady Vols placed second in the Cal Cup, which is a division below the Jessop-Whittier Cup.
