McCalley places third

UT sophomore Lauryn McCalley (Moultrie, Ga.) placed third on the three-meter springboard at the USA Diving World Championship Trials on Saturday in Athens, Ga.. Her 20-dive score of 968.31 earns McCalley the right to compete at the FINA/USA Diving Grand Prix, May 8-11, in The Woodlands, Texas.

''I'm extremely proud of Laurynâs performance,'' UT Diving Coach Dave Parrington said. ''She dove with a lot of confidence, and this is a big step toward helping her achieve her goal of qualifying for the Olympics next year.''

With the performance, McCalley, who was the top current-collegian finisher, missed a spot on the U.S. World Championship team by only one position. Rachelle Kunkel, who was also a member of the 2001 World Championship squad, won the 3m with a score of 1,073.07, while 2000 Olympian Sara Hildebrand locked up second place with 1,023.18 points.

The top two finishers at the Trials earned the right to represent the U.S. at the World Championships, while the top four finishers all qualified to compete at the FINA/USA Diving Grand Prix meet. Joining McCalley, Kunkel and Hildebrand at the Grand Prix will be fourth-place finisher Michelle Davison (947.82 points).
