Marciniak hired by South Carolina
Former Lady Vol basketball standout Michelle Marciniak is back in the Southeastern Conference ... as an assistant coach at South Carolina. Marciniak, 29, retired from the WNBA on Monday to join Coach Susan Walvius' Lady Gamecock staff. Stuck behind Sue Bird, Marciniak averaged only 12.2 minutes last season for the Seattle Storm. The combination of limited playing time and the uncertain future of the WNBA convinced her it was time to change jobs. She called it ''a pretty easy decision.'' Marciniak will coach USC's guards and do a lot of recruiting. Walvius felt she needed to get Marciniak under contract in a hurry, since Tennessee coach Pat Summitt also has an opening on her staff. "We needed to scoop her up or she was going to land somewhere else," Walvius said.
