Vols return to practice field with spirit

A cold front moved into Knoxville Tuesday morning and was still lingering here for the Volunteers seventh spring practice for Tennessee. Cold blistery winds didn't keep the Vols from turning in a better practice following Tennessee's first scrimmage of the year Saturday. Go "inside" today's practice report and see what Dooley and several of the Vol's players had to say.

A cold front moved into Knoxville Tuesday morning and was still lingering here for the Volunteers seventh spring practice for Tennessee.

Cold blistery winds didn't keep the Vols from turning in a better practice following Tennessee's first scrimmage of the year Saturday.

Dooley, who was visibly disappointed in his team's overall performance immediately following Saturday's scrimmage, approached Tuesday's post practice interview in a different mood.

"We had a good spirited practice and got a little bit better as a team today," Dooley said. "If we can a little bit better everyday we are okay."

Dooley on Bray's performance Saturday

What I think is there is a lot going through his mind, a lot more than ever went through his mind last fall. When that happens the simple throws become difficult. He missed some easy throws because he had a lot going through his mind. That's what we are seeing, that's normal.

Dooley on Rajion Neal's performance

A lot of his carries came against the No. 2 defense, he is getting better, he is making a lot of progress. He is doing somethings right and he is still doing some things not very good.

Dooley on Tauren Poole

Tauren has improved as much as anyone this spring. I know his numbers from Saturday didn't show it, but he has really worked hard and has really improved a lot. His confidence is getting better and we are expecting him to be much better this fall.

Anthony Anderson on his performance this spring

I'm healthier than I have ever been. I'm having a great spring, it feels good to be out there and be 100 percent. The secondary is getting better. We are working hard. Justin Coleman has really showed up this spring. Marsalis Teague is having a great spring. We are working hard, as if Janzen Jackson won't be here. We are hoping he will be back, but we are preparing and working to improve as if he might not be. We are all competing very hard against one another this spring.

Matt Darr on his approach of being the guy at the punter position

Going well. Getting a lot of work in. I'm really enjoying stepping in and assuming the role for Chad Cunningham. My main goal is to go in there as a guy that has been there before. A guy that's not going to make rookie mistakes. Almost like a veteran approach for me. Trying to get through the spring healthy, which has been a little struggle for me, I'm dealing with a nagging hamstring issue, not a lot of fun but I'm hanging in there. Wind didn't treat the specialist really well this past Saturday, we were dealing with a crossing wind.

Seeing Red

Prentiss Waggner and Channing Fugate wore Red non contact Jerseys on Tuesday. Fugate is dealing with a concussion issue, while Waggner is waiting the results of another x-ray on Friday to see if he has a fracture in his hand. Dooley noted that Fugate was one of those hard nosed player's who is hard to keep off the field. "He is one that doesn't complain about injuries, you have to keep an eye on those guys. He wants to play regardless, we have to be careful with him .
