Star power for RTL?

Area basketball fans love the Pilot Rocky Top Summer League, and they may love it even more this June.

RTL commissioner Andre Whitehead informs InsideTennessee that he is working on getting "a really, really big name" to participate in this year's action.

Whether or not that comes to pass, Vol fans will be happy to know that Whitehead promises the 2011 league will feature "all the Tennessee players and incoming recruits."

Expected to play are Vol veterans Cameron Tatum, Renaldo Woolridge, Kenny Hall, Skylar McBee, Jeronne Maymon, Trae Golden, Jordan McRae and Tyler Summitt, along with signees Yemi Makanjuola (6-9, 245), Dwight Miller (6-8, 245), Quinton Chievous (6-5, 200), Josh Richardson (6-5, 180) and Wes Washpun (6-1, 170).

Former UT standout Wayne Chism reportedly has committed to play in the league again this summer. He could be joined by several ex-Vols who played in the RTL previously - C.J. Watson (Chicago Bulls), Chris Lofton, Dane Bradshaw, JaJuan Smith, Ron Slay, Tyler Smith, Jon Higgins, C.J. Black, Bobby Maze, Melvin Goins, Steven Pearl and Rashard Lee.

In addition, Whitehead said the league will feature athletes from East Tennessee State, Chattanooga, Tennessee Tech, UNC-Asheville and an assortment of Div. 2, Div. 3, NAIA and junior college schools.

The annual RTL draft will be held at Ray's ESG June 8 at 6 p.m. Coaches representing the six teams - News Sentinel, DeRoyal, TRC, Ralph Brown, R.L. Smith and Choice Spine - will choose 10 players each.

Summer league play will begin Wednesday, June 15 at Bearden High School with games at 6, 7:30 and 9 p.m. Action also will be held Friday, June 17; Monday, June 20; Wednesday, June 22; Monday, June 27 and Wednesday, June 29. The final game on June 29 will be for the RTL title.

Admission for all RTL games is free.
