Although his dismissal as head football coach at Alabama appears imminent, Mike Price said earlier this week that coaching the Tide is ''everything I thought it would be ... a great opportunity to work with some really good players at a great school.''
Price, who has not yet signed his Alabama
contract, made the comments during an SEC coaches teleconference. He declined to address questions about the recent incident in which a woman-possibly a stripper- reportedly charged $1,000 worth of room-service food and drink to Price's hotel room in Pensacola, Fla. However, he was willing to offer a few thoughts on the Tide's football program.
''We brought a new offense to the school,'' he said. ''They were more of a running offense, and we brought in a passing offense. I think the quarterback situation (with Brodie Croyle) is very good.''
The outlook is not quite so rosy on defense, where graduation losses hit the Tide hard.
''Any time you lose three defensive linemen like we had that sign with pro football teams, it's hard to replace,'' Price said, referring to Kindal Moorehead, Kenny King and Jarret Johnson. ''But we've got some young guys that I think are going to be pretty good. I think we're going to be OK on the defensive line.
''We have a couple of outstanding defensive ends,'' Price added, referring to Antwan Odom and Nautyn McKay-Loescher. ''The linebackers are solid and the DBs are solid.''
Price described the kicking game as ''a question mark,'' but added that: ''All in all, it was a good spring.''
It was an INTERESTING spring, for sure.
