Bullpen saves Baseball Vols

Tennessee's bullpen pitched 9 2/3 scoreless innings last weekend against No. 22 Alabama, spurring the Vols to victories in two of the three games. The Vol ''pen'' allowed just one hit and four walks with eight strikeouts in that span.

Tennessee, now 27-21 overall and 10-14 in the SEC, lost the series opener 6-2 on Friday but bounced back to win 10-3 on Saturday and 7-4 on Sunday.

Weather permitting, the Vols will play four home games this week. They host Belmont Wednesday at 7, then host Arkansas Friday at 7, Saturday at 7 and Sunday at 1. Saturday's game is scheduled for telecast by CSS-TV.

The series win over Bama was the Vols' third SEC series win this season and the first series win over Alabama since 2001. UT improved to 4-8 against the SEC Western Division heading into the Arkansas series this weekend.

First baseman Nick Crowe needs two hits for 100 in his career, while center fielder Jordan Czarniecki needs three runs for 100 in his career. Both Czarniecki and Walter Sevilla played and started in their 100th career games against Alabama last Friday.

Left fielder Josh Alley went 6-for-14 (.429) in four games last week, driving in seven runs with one home run and drawing five walks.

Tennessee is 17-7 in non-conference play heading into its final non-league game vs. Belmont. A win over the Bruins would insure a winning record for the regular season.
