Harris wins leadership award

Vol decathlete and team captain Stephen Harris is the inaugural recipient of the 2003 Collegiate Athlete Leadership Award, presented by the United States Marine Corps. A standout athlete and citizen, Harris' winning score of 8,103 from March's College Station Decathlon currently leads the world this year.

In making the announcement of the award, Major Tedd Studdard and Captain Eric Syverson, both from the Marine Corps Recruiting Station in Nashville, said that Harris, a history major from Norcross, Ga., "is the student-athlete who most exemplifies selflessness, teamwork, and leadership in the academic and athletic arenas." The award covers the areas of Tennessee, North Alabama and North Mississippi.

In addition, they said, "He also has been committed to excellence in elevating the performance of others both on and off campus." Harris was also team co-captain for the Vols' 2002 NCAA Indoor title run.

The award will be presented Wednesday, May 7 at 11 a.m., in the lobby of the Thornton Athletics Student Center on campus.
