SEC picks

Twelve games involving SEC teams are scheduled on college football's opening weekend, and nine of the 12 appear to be typical Week 1 mismatches.

The three exceptions: Boise State vs. Georgia, Oregon vs. LSU and Brigham Young vs. Ole Miss.

Back by popular demand, InsideTennessee's staff is again making its SEC picks on all of this season's conference contests. Here are our projections for this week's games:

Josh Woodward picks

Mississippi State AT Memphis (Thursday): 35-7, Bulldogs. Memphis is bad so the Bulldogs will roll.

Kentucky VS. Western Kentucky (Thursday in Nashville): 42-7, Big Blue. Wildcats like playing in Nashville, which will likely be a bowl destination for them at the end of the year.

Kent State AT Alabama: 48-3. Roll Tide Roll

Missouri STATE AT Arkansas: 57-20, Razorbacks. What do you say about Arkansas, they can score.

Utah State AT Auburn: 35-14, Tigers. Auburn will be a totally different team this year.

Florida Atlantic AT Florida: 28-17, Gators. Florida in a closer than expected game.

BOISE STATE VS. GEORGIA (Atlanta): 31-28, Georgia in a close one. Kellen Moore lost all his weapons.

OREGON VS. LSU (Arlington, Texas): 34-28, Tigers over the Ducks.

BRIGHAM YOUNG AT OLE MISS: 28-24, BYU. Ole Miss is not that good.

East Carolina VS. South Carolina (Charlotte): 42-20, Gamecocks. They look to be the best in the SEC East.

ELON AT Vanderbilt: 21-20. James Franklin gets a big win, his first.

MONTANA AT Tennessee: 45-13. Easy day for the Vols. Montana is not as good as they have been in the past.

Randy Moore picks

MISSISSIPPI STATE AT MEMPHIS (Thursday): The Bulldogs are a top-20 team. The Tigers may not be a top-100 team. Mississippi State, 41-10

KENTUCKY VS. WESTERN KENTUCKY (Thursday in Nashville): Can someone explain why two teams from Kentucky are playing in Tennessee's state capitol? Wildcats, 34-14

KENT STATE AT ALABAMA: Yawn. Tide, 49-0

MISSOURI STATE AT ARKANSAS: Yawn part 2. Hogs, 56-7

Utah STATE AT AUBURN: Cam Newton is gone but Gus Malzahn is still around. That'll be enough this week. Tigers, 31-14

FLORIDA ATLANTIC AT FLORIDA: The Gators open their two-game appetizer course before facing Tennessee in Game 3. Florida, 38-10

BOISE STATE VS. GEORGIA (Atlanta): West Coast teams tend to struggle when they visit SEC foes, and Atlanta is not my idea of a neutral site. Dawgs, 27-24

OREGON VS. LSU (Arlington, Texas): The Ducks prove that not all West Coast teams tend to struggle when they visit SEC foes. Oregon 28, LSU 17

BRIGHAM YOUNG AT OLE MISS: Brigham Young's founder had multiple wives. Ole Miss' coach has multiple problems. BYU, 31-24

EAST CAROLINA VS. SOUTH CAROLINA (Charlotte): Wonder if the Ol' Ball Coach can go an entire game without dissing Stephen Garcia? Probably not. South Carolina, 31-13

ELON AT VANDERBILT: Vandy's euphoria continues ... at least until the Commodores face a team with a pulse. Commodores, 28-10

MONTANA AT TENNESSEE: First-game jitters might slow the Vols. The Grizzlies won't. Vols, 38-14

Danny Parker picks

MISSISSIPPI STATE AT MEMPHIS (Thursday): Mississippi State. It's Memphis. This isn't basketball season. 45-6

WESTERN KENTUCKY VS. KENTUCKY (Thursday in Nashville): Kentucky. Western is still trying to find its place in college football. 52-0

KENT STATE AT ALABAMA: Alabama. Just a tune-up. The buzz will center around which QB took the field first for the Tide. 57-0

MISSOURI STATE AT ARKANSAS: Arkansas. Sorry coach Cuonzo Martin but the Piggies will burn your old team. 61-6

UTAH STATE AT AUBURN: Auburn. The Tigers don't have any single-semester supermen this season but should handle Utah State. 34-17

FLORIDA ATLANTIC AT FLORIDA: Florida. Muschamp gets his first-ever victory as a head coach. 38-12

BOISE STATE VS. GEORGIA (Atlanta): Boise State. Has anybody seen Garrison Hearst? Terrell Davis? Dawgs need some backs. 23-10

OREGON VS. LSU (Arlington, Texas): Oregon. Simply too much going on off the field for the Tigers to pull it out against that pace. 27-17

BRIGHAM YOUNG AT OLE MISS: Brigham Young. The Rebels get a look at the second-best QB they'll see this season — Jake Heaps. BYU, 36-28

SOUTH CAROLINA VS. EAST CAROLINA (Charlotte): S. Carolina. Lattimore gets an early start on a 360-carry season. Gamecocks, 42-7

ELON AT VANDERBILT: Vanderbilt. Over 26,000 not-so-loud Commodore faithful ring in the Franklin era victorious. Vandy, 23-10

MONTANA AT TENNESSEE: Tennessee. I like my job. Can't risk picking the Grizzlies even if my dad was the coach. 45-6

Chris Price picks

MISSISSIPPI STATE AT MEMPHIS (Thursday): Mississippi State will take over this one early. The Bulldogs are a talented football team in an impossible division. State wins, 48-13.

KENTUCKY VS. WESTERN KENTUCKY (Thursday in Nashville): Kentucky will start their year off on the right foot. Just don't see them losing this game regardless of location. Wildcats, 38-23.

KENT STATE AT ALABAMA: Is this really a pick? The Tide rolls over Kent State like a bulldozer. Alabama, 63-9.

MISSOURI STATE AT ARKANSAS: Arkansas will be ready to go in this one. The loss of Davis hurts, but not in this one. Hogs win, 41-10.

UTAH STATE AT AUBURN: Auburn won't lose this one. They aren't even going to sniff Atlanta this season without Newton, but they will take care of business in this one no problem. Tigers, 31-10.

FLORIDA ATLANTIC AT FLORIDA: Will Muschamp is undefeated after one. Will be interesting to watch how far the Gators run away with this one, though. FAU will be a good time to get a glance at the Vols' Week 3 opponent. Gators win, 31-6.

BOISE STATE VS. GEORGIA (Atlanta): This is Georgia's time to shine, but I am calling for the upset. I just don't think the Dogs are going to take them seriously enough. Don't get me wrong: I am not one of those people saying they deserve a National Title shot, but Boise is for real. Broncos, 38-17.

OREGON VS. LSU (Arlington, Texas): It may help them in the long run, but the loss of Jefferson doesn't help at all in the short term. Oregon tops the might Tigers in Week 1. Ducks win, 33-20.

BRIGHAM YOUNG AT OLE MISS: Going to have to pick against the SEC once again in this one. The independent tops the mighty SEC. BYU tops Rebels, 28-17.

EAST CAROLINA VS. SOUTH CAROLINA (Charlotte): South Carolina gets off to a good start with a win over East Carolina. The ball coach is 1-0 in 2011. Gamecocks, 31-14.

ELON AT VANDERBILT: Not even Vandy will struggle with Elon. Boring pick. Commodores are 1-0. 31-6.

MONTANA AT TENNESSEE: Tennessee will cover the 28-point spread. For kicks, I predict the first touchdown will be a throw to Da' Rick Rogers. Vols win, 51-10.
