Lady golfers finish 18th

The Lady Vol golf team concluded the 2003 NCAA Central Regional in Lincoln, Neb., with an 18th-place finish. UT carded a 948 (321-306-321) for the tournament to finish 14 shots shy of the top eight NCAA Championship qualifying squads.

California toyed with the Firethorn Golf Course and the rest of the field to capture the regional title by 20 shots with an 897 (292-292-313). Kent State, Texas, Purdue, Nebraska, Wisconsin, Florida and Tulsa move on to West Lafayette, Ind., for the culminating event of the season, while Kansas State‚s Christine Boucher and Texas A&M's Nicole Melton earned berths at the championship as unattached players. Individually, Wisconsin's Katie Connelly fired a 217 (71-70-76) to claim the NCAA Central Regional medal.

Freshman Violeta Retamoza (Aguascalientes, Mexico) led UT golfers with a 231 (82-74-75) to tie for 24th, while team captain Jessica Shepley (Oakville, Ontario, Canada) carded a 47th-place tying 238 (78-78-82). Junior Tai Perry (Unionville, Pa.) tied for 59th-place with a 240 (78-76-86), while classmate Mary Jan Fernandez (Henderson, Nev.) carded a 243 (84-81-78) to tie for 72nd-place. Rookie Golda Johansson (Lund, Sweden) rounded out the Lady Vol effort with an 88th-place 248 (83-78-87).
