Fellow sophomores John-Scott Rattan and David Skinns are also under par for Tennessee.
Rattan and Skinns both fired scores of 70 to tie for 10th place. Rattan closed out a steady day of play with five birdies, while Skinns bounced back from a rough front nine to card six birdies, five on the final nine holes.
Next is senior Andrew Pratt. Pratt fired a 74 to tie him for 45th place. Rounding out the Vol scoring is fellow senior Ian Parnaby who is in 81st with a 77.
Following the Vols and Yellow Jackets is top-ranked Clemson with a score of 285. Duke is in fourth with a 286 There is a three-way tie for fifth between No. 5 Florida, No. 4 Augusta State and No. 2 Wake Forest with scores of 290.
Following McGowan and Maybin is a three-way tie for third. William Ted Brown of Virginia Commonwealth, defending NCAA individual champion Troy Matteson of Georgia Tech and Alvero Velasco of Coastal Carolina are tied for third with scores of 68 to round out the top individuals.
The Vols will continue play toiday with the second round of the tournament.
