Rape charge clouds Gibbs Hall

Knoxville police continue to investigate allegations that an underage girl was sexually assaulted 10 days ago by a Vol football player at Gibbs Hall.

Speaking to The Knoxville News-Sentinel, head coach Phillip Fulmer confirmed that at least one of his players had been involved in some kind of ''incident.'' Fulmer promised that he is "continuing to look into this."

The incident allegedly occurred Saturday, May 17 and was reported to UT police a day later. UT then turned the matter over to Knoxville Police Department, which investigates all ''major'' crimes that take place on campus.

According to Assistant UT Police Chief Deborah Perry, two girls, ages 17 and 16, visited the second floor of Gibbs Hall. One of the girls later reported that she had been sexually assaulted. Perry offered no further details except to indicate that only one person was considered a suspect.

Gibbs Hall formerly held only athletes. Recent NCAA regulations, however, have opened the dormitory to some non-athletes, as well.
