Skinns shoots 68 at NCAAs

Tennessee didn't qualify for the final round of the NCAA Golf Championships as a team but sophomore David Skinns qualified as an individual.

Skinns carded a four-under-par 68 in Thursday's third round to keep his hopes alive.

''David had a great round of golf today,'' Tennessee head coch Jim Kelson said. ''The golf course played a little easier today, and he took advantage of it.''

So did Vol Ross McGowan. After shooting 87 and 84 in his first two rounds, McGowan carded a 1-over-par 73 that included a four-under-par 32 on the back nine. UT teammate John-Scott Rattan also shot a 73 on Thursday.

Tennessee shot a team total of 295 strokes on Thursday -- their best round of the tournament -- but still finished 23rd. The Vols started poorly, shooting 320 and 310 in the first two rounds.
