Castellvi finishes ranked No. 1

Even though she lost in the NCAA Singles finals, Lady Vol tennis star Vilmarie Castellvi has finished the 2003 college tennis season ranked No. 1 nationally.

Castellvi ranked No. 1 during the fall 2002 season, slipped to No. 4 during the early spring of 2003 but rallied to reclaim the No. 1 spot in April. She was top seed for the NCAA Tournament and breezed through to the title match, where she was upset by Stanford freshman Amber Liu.

Castellvi, who won two of three matches from Liu during the regular season, finished her senior year with a 45-5 record, including a 20-2 mark against top-25 opponents. Her career record is 140-51. She is the only player in Lady Vol history to advance to the NCAA semifinals or finals.

Liu finished third in the final rankings.
