Pat Summitt responds to SI award

Pat Summitt, accompanied by her son Tyler Summitt, is headed for New York to receive Sports Illustrated's most prestigious award given to the sports figure of the year.

The specifics of the announcement can be read HERE AT SI.COM.

Pat Summitt will share the award with Duke's Mike Krzyzewski as the 2011 SPORTS ILLUSTRATED Sportswoman and Sportsman of the Year.

"Obviously, this is a tremendous honor," Summitt said. "I am so privileged to share it with such a great coach in Mike Krzyzewski. During our careers, we have both been fortunate to work with so many talented student-athletes who were driven to excel both on and off the court.

"For me, this recognition is a direct reflection of the outstanding young women who have worn the orange and white Lady Vol jersey of the University of Tennessee; the coaching staffs I have worked with throughout my career and the supportive administration at UT."

The two coaches will be honored in New York City on Tuesday evening, where they will be joined by fellow Sportswomen and Sportsmen Chris Evert (1976), Sugar Ray Leonard (1981), Wayne Gretzky (1982), David Robinson (2003) and David Ortiz (2004).

It will be a quick turn-around for Summitt. She will return to Knoxville - the Lady Vols practice Wednesday - and then head back to New York on Friday with her team in advance of Sunday's game against DePaul in the Maggie Dixon Classic at Madison Square Garden.
