Baseball Vols get transfer

Chase Headley, a third baseman from University of the Pacific in Stockton, Calif., has transferred to the University of Tennessee and will play next season. Headley brings the total of newcomers to 10 for the 2004 season.

''We are extremely excited about getting Chase,'' said UT head man Rod Delmonico. ''He is an excellent hitter and fielder who has a tremendous upside that could make him an early-round draft pick by the time his career is over. Along with Chris Kemp (slugging first baseman signed earlier this week out of junior college), I think we have added some potent hitters to the middle of our lineup.''

Headley, a 6-1, 195-pound sophomore switch-hitter from Fountain, Colo., started 54 games while batting .330 with three home runs and 26 RBI in 2003. He also collected 13 doubles and two triples with 36 runs scored. He led the Tigers with 64 hits while also being patient at the plate, drawing 39 walks and posting a .453 on-base percentage for Pacific.
