Stewart cited in rape investigation

Two police incident reports cited by The Associated Press identify redshirt freshman Antwan Stewart as the UT football player accused of raping a 16-year-old girl at the Gibbs Hall Dormitory last month. The story was published in numerous Tennessee newspapers over the weekend.

The alleged victim reported to police on May 18 that she had been sexually assaulted the previous night while visiting Gibbs Hall with a 17-year-old girlfriend. After filing an incident report, Knoxville police launched an investigation into the allegations.

Investigators initially declined to release the report because the girl is a minor but repeated requests by The Knoxville News-Sentinel eventually convinced them to make the incident report available. This enabled The Associated Press to identify Stewart as the suspect.

No charges have been filed against Stewart, a 19-year-old from Triangle, Va., but authorities say the investigation is continuing. A UT police report quotes the girl as saying that she and her friend were visiting the room of Marvin Mitchell -- also a Vol football player -- when a young male she knew only as Antwan escorted her into another room and allegedly assaulted her.

Mitchell is not accused of any involvement in the incident, which allegedly took place between 6 and 7 p.m.
