Baseball Vols continue skid

Tennessee head baseball coach Dave Serrano will have to celebrate 300 wins on the road in Athens, Ga. if the Vols are able to get a win against the Georgia Bulldogs, something they couldn't manage when in-state foe Tennessee Tech visited Lindsey Nelson Stadium Tuesday night.

Tech's Seth Lucio lead an impressive 5-1 defensive effort for the Golden Eagles hurling 11 strikeouts in the contest in eight and one third innings.

The Volunteers were unable to capitalize on multiple scoring opportunities leaving nine runners stranded in the paths, including a fully-loaded fifth inning.

The Golden Eagles Zach Stephens set the tone early with a solo home run in the top of the second inning enticing two intention walks during the remainder of the game.

A pair of fielding errors by Vols first baseman Davis Morgan were converted into big-time runs in the heart of the evening, including a two-run sixth inning followed by back-to-back scores in the seventh and eighth.

The lone bright spot in Tennessee's night came from freshman second baseman Will Maddox, who was 3-4 on the evening with a walk. Tuesday's game makes eight straight contests in which Maddox has put a ball in play.

The Volunteers were able to mount a late charge when Lucio was pulled after he followed an opening ninth inning strikeout with two consecutive hit batsmen, but the Vols only got one across the plate before Chris Fritts grounded out to close the contest.

Tuesday's loss marks the third in the row for the Baseball Vols as they finish up non-conference play and read for their Southeastern Conference schedule.

The Vols will travel to SEC east rival Georgia to open league play with a three-game road trip in Athens, Ga. They will open the weekend Friday at 7 p.m.
