Fulmer dismisses Ruben Mayes

The head football coach continued to rid his football team of players that couldn't follow team and university rules. Redshirt frosh Ruben Mayes became the latest victim of the summer.

Reserve fullback Ruben Mayes has been dismissed from the Vol football team for failed substance tests, according to published reports. He is the second UT player dismissed on substance grounds this offseason. Wide receiver Montrell Jones was shown the door two months ago.

Mayes was a highly regarded prospect at Ridgeway High of Memphis, being ranked in the top 10 nationally among fullbacks after rushing for 1,339 yards as a senior. He ran for more than 1,600 yards as a junior. He redshirted at UT last fall but was expected to compete for backup action in 2003.

The dismissal of Mayes leaves UT with just three fullbacks -- senior Troy Fleming, plus sophomore backups Will Revill and Sudan Ellington. Fleming started every game as a junior. Revill has shown great promise as a blocker and receiver. Ellington is a converted linebacker and tight end who is still looking to find his niche.
