Baker, Greer on Thorpe 'watch list'

Senior safety Rashad Baker and senior cornerback Jabari Greer of the UT football team have been named to the 2003 preseason watch list for the Jim Thorpe Award, given annually to the nation's top defensive back.

Baker, entering his fourth year as a starter, ranked sixth on the Vol tackle chart last fall with 60 tackles. He led the Vols with five interceptions and also recorded two quarterbck hurries and a forced fumble.

Greer, who has started for most of the past two seasons, led Tennessee with 14 pass breakups last fall, doubling the total of runnerup Baker. He won the 60-meter hurdles title at the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships last winter.

The Thorpe watch list will be narrowed to 10 semi-finalists in early November and to three finalists the Monday before Thanksgiving. The winner will be announced on ESPN's College Football Awards Show, scheduled to air December 11.

Other SEC players on the watch list are Ahmad Carroll of Arkansas, Kentrell Curry of Georgia, Keiwan Ratliff of Florida, Lawrence Richardson of Arkansas and Guss Scott of Florida.

Players not on the list who have exceptional seasons may be added at a later date. Thus, UT strong safety Gibril Wilson could move into contention for the Thorpe Award with a big senior season.
