The InsideTennessee.com staff of beat reporters hasn't missed a Tennessee
football practice since Josh Woodward took over as the magazine and website's publisher.
Stationed at various parts of Haslam Field and Neyland-Thompson Sports Center, the crew is taking in the Volunteer workouts with a watchful eye to keep its site subscribers as educated on the Big Orange as possible.
Thursday afternoon was no different as InsideTennessee ventured to another preseason camp workout to get as much information, photographs and video footage as possible.
Here's a look at what stuck out to us Thursday afternoon:
The Volunteers planned on being on Haslam Field for Day 7 of camp but overcast skies quickly turned to pouring rain only minutes before the team was about to head outside, forcing the workout to take place inside the Neyland-Thompson Sports Center.
NFL scouts from both the Kansas City Chiefs and the Houston Texas were on hand.
From the offensive side…
Freshman tailback Davante' Bourque was absent Thursday — likely due to an injury that coach Derek Dooley said was neck "whiplash" that occurred last week during practice. He was not around the practice field observing. Alton "Pig" Howard (foot) was not on hand either.
Former Tennessee head coach Johnny Majors was on hand. He departed shortly after individual periods concluded.
Walk-on running back Deanthonie Summerhill was stripped on the football by assistant coach Jay Graham during individual drills and true to form the entire group participated in a series of up-downs following the ball touching the turf. None of the other tailbacks put the ball on the ground during the period.
Wide receiver Cordarrelle Patterson (shoulder sprain) was completely dressed out except for shoulder pads. He observed wideout drills from the sidelines. Senior Zach Rogers worked as the No. 3 pass-catcher during the two-minute drill period.
New right end Joseph Ayres is now wearing No. 88, which was vacated when Cameron Clear was removed from the roster. Tight ends continue to work exclusively on blocking fundamentals and scheme with assistant coach Charlie Coiner in the early period. Mychal Rivera was not seen. Justin Meredith was in full-dress and strapped up but not participating in blocking drills.
In two tight end sets, Brendan Downs and Ben Bartholomew were used. Working with the second team were Alex Ellis and Dakota Summers.
From the defensive side…
Freshman Kenneth Bynum (meniscus tear) continues to be on crutches observing practice. InsideTennessee has yet to hear of any results stemming from what was originally scheduled to be an MRI onvWednesday.
Safety Brent Brewer added a new compression sleeve on his left thigh in addition to the one that covers his calf and surgically repaired knee. Brewer continues to work alongside safety Brian Randolph with the No. 1 defensive unit.
MIKE linebacker Christian Harris was completely dressed out but did not participate with the team, instead doing rehab on the artificial turf with a trainer.
