Jones 11th in world diving

Vol diver Phillip Jones has placed 11th in the world in the 3-meter springboard event at the World Championships in Barcelona, Spain.

''I am ecstatic to see Phil dive so well under this pressure,'' head diving coach Dave Parrington said. ''The fact he made it to the finals showed a lot of guts. He got up and down well all day long.''

Jones finished 9th in the morning preliminaries among a tough field of 45 divers. The top 18 then moved onto the semis later in the afternoon, where Jones slipped one spot to 10th and then dropped one more spot in the evening's finals.

''I'm very proud of his performance thus far, considering his lack of experience at the world level,'' Parrington said. ''This is huge for his career. It is a big step to international success. He learned a lot of lessons and we will try to take them to another level. He scrapped hard and showed a lot of heart, We are all very proud of him.''

Jones will be competing in the 1-meter springboard event today.
