Vol talent may be overrated

Perhaps the 8-5 record posted by Tennessee's football team last season was no fluke. Perhaps the Vols' talent level isn't as high as some people like to think.

That seems to be the feeling of the folks at Collegefootballnews.com. They rank just three UT players among the top 25 nationally at their positions heading into the 2003 season.

Dustin Colquitt is ranked No. 10 in the punters/placekickers category. Rashad Baker is ranked No. 14 among defensive backs. Casey Clausen is rated No. 15 among quarterbacks.

Surprisingly, Michael Munoz is not listed among the top 25 offensive linemen. Likewise, Cedric Houston is not listed among the top 25 running backs.

Perhaps Collegefootballnews.com is right. Maybe Tennessee's talent has slipped, along with its status as an elite program. Only time will tell.
