Davis finds 'perfect fit' role

Antone Davis is a former All-American at Tennessee, a former first-round NFL Draft selection that spent seven years in the trenches blocking the world's best, and a person who transformed himself physically by dropping over 200 pounds in front of a national TV audience.

Third-year Tennessee coach Derek Dooley calls Davis an "impressive person" and seems quite pleased with pegging Davis as the second coordinator of the Vol For Life program.

"Coach is intense, but he has clear direction," Davis said of Dooley. "He knows where he wants to go. He knows where he wants to take the program, so I have a lot of respect for that."

What Davis is taking over is a system that "centers on six areas of personal growth: decision-making skills, personal finance, career placement, spiritual growth, community outreach and NFL preparation."

"I have a lot to offer these guys from the standpoint of what I've done on the field and off," Davis said.

Davis was hired to replace Andre Lott, who had been over the program since its inception in June 2010.

With the changeover from Phillip Fulmer to Lane Kiffin to Dooley, several people that were around the program moved on. What Davis can provide is a stepping stone to the past and some of the rich tradition that makes Tennessee what it is.

"I think it's important," Davis said of having been coached by Johnny Majors. "I think it's extremely important to say, 'The tradition is still here, the bloodline so to speak, is still here.' It is huge for me to have played under coach Majors and trained under coach Fulmer and to understand what that's all about and to carry that forward."
