However, less than 12 hours later he did just that — he gave his commitment to head football coach Butch Jones making their 19 commitment of this 2013 class.
"I got a great reaction from my parents when I returned home," Quinn told InsideTennessee. "It was mostly my dad and I talking about the depth and my chance to play. Obviously Tennessee was the highest-profile school to offer me and where I had the best chance to play. It was kind of too good to be true. We didn't really even discuss the distance. He knew I was comfortable there and the people were great so I figured, why not?"
Although Quinn, a former volleyball player at Pepperdine, wasn't heavily recruited, he said it was Jones' vision for his career in the Orange & White that put him over the top.
"The main thing about Tennessee was how much the coaches believed in me," he said. "Coach Jones really made all this possible with his belief in me and his vision for me. I didn't know where I was on their board, I knew I was high, but you kind of have to take everything with a grain of salt in recruiting, but when I got there you could tell they wanted me. That really put it over the top for me."
At 6-foot-6, 256 pounds, Quinn will be the biggest tight on Tennessee's current roster and says that he catches the ball naturally and is continuing to work on his blocking ability.
"I can catch the ball pretty naturally, but what I have tried to work on is my blocking because you can always go out and catch the ball with your friends, but you have to work at blocking," he said. "I wasn't proud of my film this year with that, but it was enough to get me noticed. Now I just have to work at getting better every day. My volleyball coach used to say ‘get one percent better every day.' That is my goal."
And some coach that was who gave him that advice, Quinn's high school volleyball coach was arguably the best volleyball player in the history of the sport, Karch Kiraly.
Quinn Quinn finished the 2012 season with Santa Ana with 15 catches for 252 yards and one touchdown.
