Ryan Kellogg (2-0) twirled five innings of walk-free baseball, striking out six and giving up just three hits. Ryan Burr and Matt Dunbar combined to allow only two hits and in four shutout frames.
Freshman Andy Cox (1-1) took the loss for the Volunteers. The southpaw, in his first rubber toeing at Lindsey Nelson Stadium, went 4 1/3 innings with four strikeouts, six hits allowed and one base on balls. Four of the five runs were credited to his line. Trevor Bettencourt relinquished just one hit and no walks in 3 2/3 frames. Nick Williams needed just 10 pitches to retire all three batters he faced in the ninth.
Big Orange Country did its part in support of their team, breaking a school record for most fans for a home-opening series, churning out 6,508 spectators. That broke the 2011 mark of 6,111.
