Vols blast UMass, 86-67

RALEIGH, N.C. — Eleventh-seeded Tennessee raced to a 21-8 lead and was never seriously threatened thereafter in trouncing No. 6 seed UMass 86-67 here Friday in NCAA Midwest Regional Tournament action.

The win, coupled with No. 14 seed Mercer's stunning 78-71 defeat of third-seeded Duke, puts the Vols (23-12) and the Bears (27-8) in Sunday's Round of 32 game at PNC Arena. The winner of that game will advance to Sweet 16 play at indianapolis.

Vol junior post Jarnell Stokes proved unstoppable on Friday, hitting 7 of 12 field-goal tries and 12 of 13 foul shots en route to 26 points. Jordan McRae added 21 points, Josh Richardson 15 and Jeronne Maymon 11.

Tennessee led 41-22 at halftime. UMass closed to 46-36 early in the second half but McRae sparked an 11-4 spurt that bumped the lead to 57-40 and reclaimed the momentum.
