The Vols (18-3, 2-2 Southeastern Conference) mounted a ninth-inning rally but left the bases loaded versus Tigers reliever Terrance Dedrick. In all, Tennessee had 11 left on base.
Damek Tomscha walked, Ryan Tella singled and Blake Austin laced a two-run double to right-center.
The decisive sixth-inning run came with two outs as well after Keegan Thompson singled home Austin, who led off the inning with a hit by pitch.
Starting pitcher Nick Williams got the loss. He went eight solid innings, striking out four with six hits and two walks allowed.
Hunter Martin (2-0, 0.73) takes the hill for the Vols on Saturday versus Auburn freshman sensation Thompson (4-0, 0.69). Tennessee looks to tie its 2013 output of SEC series won (2).
