Unlike other sports, summers are a prime time for collegiate baseball players to take the next step in the maturation process both playing against and amongst players from universities all over the country.
They also get to spend months in a region of the country where most have never even visited.
Here's a look at how several of the Tennessee Volunteers played this summer with stats compiled from the university:
Christin Stewart: USA Baseball Collegiate National Team Gold Medal – Led Team USA with a .383 batting average, 31 hits, 12 doubles and a .605 slugging percentage over 25 games (21 starts).
Vincent Jackson: Cape Cod League Championship title – Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox
Drake Owenby: Cape Cod League Championship title – Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox
A.J. Simcox: Cape Cod League Championship title – Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox
Andrew Lee: Cape Cod League - Brewster Whitecaps; Led the Whitecaps with a .333 average in 24 games
Tyler Schultz: California Collegiate League Championship title and All-Star – Los Angeles Brewers
Bret Marks: Alaska Baseball League All-Star – Anchorage Bucs; League leader with 49 strikeouts while maintaining a 1.89 ERA
Jordan Rodgers: Alaska Baseball League All-Star – Matsu Miners
Kyle Serrano: Alaska Baseball League – Matsu Miners; Recorded 35 strikeouts in 23.2 innings pitched
Derek Lance: Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League All-Star and Postseason First Team honors – Cincinnati Steam
Andy Cox: Led the Vols pitching staff with a 2.44 ERA and 70 strikeouts in 2014, while his 27 appearances were tops among club pitchers. His five wins also tied for most on the team with former Vol Nick Williams (5-5).
