The news about the declining health of Pat Summitt broke Sunday morning, and the support, thoughts and prayers came in from all corners of the world. That is not surprising.
What was refreshingly surprising was local and national media, including ESPN, were aware of the situation Friday evening and waited to report it out of respect for Summitt as players and family members were making their way to Knoxville. In the era of social media - and the news crept onto that platform in the wee hours Sunday - that is remarkable.
The Pat Summitt Foundation issued a statement Sunday morning: “On behalf of Pat Summitt’s family, we acknowledge the past few days have been difficult for Pat as her early onset dementia, ‘Alzheimer’s Type,’ progresses. She is surrounded by those who mean the most to her and during this time, we ask for prayers for Pat and her family and friends, as well as your utmost respect and privacy. Thank you.”
The hashtag #PrayforPat can be found across social media. Here is a sampling of those reaching out in support:
And while everyone prays for Summitt and keeps her in their thoughts, let's support her, too. The only hope for those suffering with this disease - and their families - is a cure. Donate to her foundation by clicking here. Back Pat. Always Back Pat.
