Gallery: 5-star RB Cam Akers competing at The Opening

Cam Akers could be a part of Tennessee's "Chain Moving Gang" of the future.

BEAVERTON, Ore. — Cam Akers once was a Scout four-star prospect, now he's a five-star.

The Clinton (Miss.) High School quarterback just four months ago was the No. 8-ranked running back in the 2017 class.

Akers opened up eyes at The Opening New Orleans and then competed at The Opening Finals and earned a boost up to No. 2 nationally at his position.

So, in four months time the playmaker rocketed past half a dozen talented runners and even more classmates en route to being the No. 4 player overall.

None of this is of any surprise to Tennessee and assistant coach Robert Gillespie, who's been recruiting Akers since October 2014. The early identification of the talent and the relationship forged between the two could yield for success in the years go come.
