Tennessee running back John Kelly first proved he was something special in the Vols-Texas A&M matchup when he racked up nearly 90 rushing yards on 13 carries.
Four weeks later, after starter Jalen Hurd parted ways with the Vols, the 5-foot-9, 212-pound sophomore back received his first starting opportunity in the homecoming game and thus rendered himself even more explosive. The speedster stacked up even more yardage on half the number of carries than his breakout performance versus the Aggies —104 yards on 7 attempts versus Tennessee Tech, to be exact. One of those attempts resulted in a 73-yard dash straight to the end zone.
"Once my role kind of expanded in the middle of the year, I was just expected to go out there and make sure there was no significant drop-off from none of the backs that were out there," Kelly said. "I've honestly just being trying to provide as much help as I can with the role that I've been given, so I'm just really trying to take advantage of it and I just feel like I've really exceeded my expectations."
