Road Trip: TSSAA Class A, 3A, 5A state championships

Three more gold balls went home with TSSAA state champions Friday. Learn more.

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. — Taylor Jones' 45-yard touchdown reception from Hunter Willis put Greenback ahead of Dresden 27-20 with 3:04 to play in the second quarter of the TSSAA Class A state championship midday Friday.

The Cherokees, who entered with a 14-0 record and averaging 47.2 points per game, wouldn't score another point in 2016. The Lions erupted for the game's final 42 points en route to a 62-27 win.

And that was just how the day started.

In the 3A finale, Alcoa earned its 15th gold ball and picked up its program's 101st playoff victory all-time with a 45-12 win over an overmatched Liberty Magnet school making its fist championship appearance.

The Tornadoes (14-1) didn't need tremendous production from their Mr. Football winner, wide receiver Tykee Ogle-Kellogg, but he came up with 81 yards and a touchdown on his two catches.

The most competitive contest was the Friday finale as No. 1-ranked Independence put its 29-game winning streak on the line against Farragut, which had never before reached the championship game.

Brandon Hines' 8-yard touchdown run put the Eagles ahead 35-7 with 2:49 to go in the opening half. However, what looked like a skunk turned out to be an epic comeback.

Farragut put up 38 unanswered points and came out with a 45-35 victory.
