Insider Report: Top Vols targets at The Opening Charlotte

What Tennessee recruiting targets performed the best at The Opening Charlotte on Sunday. Let our team that was in attendance inform you.

MATTHEWS, N.C. — Some of the more talented high school football players on Tennessee's recruiting radar put their talent on display amidst some fierce competition at The Opening Charlotte on Sunday.

It was one of the finer collections of skill ever at the Queen City event since NIKE started inviting players in the region to compete against one another.

Some of the potential Volunteers that showed out were from both the 2018 and 2019 classes.

In the defensive backfield, Jaycee Horn of Alpharetta (Ga.) High School was one of the few defensive backs that was able to stay hip-to-hip with receivers without tugging the shirt his opposition.

Staying in the Peach State, linebacker Owen Pappoe of Grayson (Ga.) High School did nothing to discourage the notion that he may be the top sophomore in the United States of America.

With Sheriron Jones' transfer, Tennessee may wind up signing two quarterbacks in the 2018 cycle. Michael Penix Jr. is committed but a right-hander that slung the football well enough to get an invitation to The Opening Finals. The former Kentucky commit that's heavily interested in the Volunteers showed some pinpoint accuracy in Charlotte.

Arguably the Bluegrass State's best sophomore pass rusher is Stephen Herron of Trinity (Ky.) High School. The Scout four-star prospect has long heard about Tennessee from former defensive line coach Steve Stripling but now it's on Brady Hoke to reel Herron in. The 6-foot-4, 220-pounder showed he can roll with upperclassmen and reached the finals of the D-line versus O-line one-on-ones.
