Bearcats contact Chavis

The University of Cincinnati has contacted Vol defensive coordinator John Chavis about the Bearcats' vacant head coaching position, according to a report in today's Knoxville News-Sentinel.

Chavis, 47, has declined offers to be a NFL assistant in the past but has expressed keen interest in becoming a head coach someday. He was mentioned as a candidate for the head coaching position at East Carolina one year ago (he's a native of Dillon, S.C.) but never interviewed.

A UT grad, Chavis loves the Vol program but appears eager to run his own program. If Cincinnati makes a serious commitment to him, he could be the second Vol aide to leave this month. Running backs coach Woody McCorvey departed earlier this week to become offensive coordinator at Mississippi State.

What happens to the Vol staff if Chavis leaves? Secondary coach Larry Slade had a two-year stint as defensive coordinator at Maryland (1992-93) but the best bet is that head coach Phillip Fulmer would elevate defensive line coach Dan Brooks, who has turned down several coordinator offers in recent years to remain at Tennessee.

Since Chavis coaches linebackers, former Vol 'backer Dale Jones might be a leading candidate to fill the vacancy created by Chavis' departure.
