Hawkins Awed By LSU Visit

Tennessee's chances of signing a top notch wide receiver in the Class of 2004 appear to be on the wane. Lavelle Hawkins, of Edison Senior High in Stockton, Calif., recently returned from a visit to LSU and is scheduled to visit Miami this week.

He has yet to set a visit to Tennessee although he has been offered and was visited last week by UT's Randy Sanders. Hawkins is also said to be considering Oklahoma, Oregon State and Washington.

"I had a great trip," Hawkins told The Insiders Scott Kennedy. "We ate a lot of Cajun food. I was very impressed with the facilities. The highlight of my trip was walking into Tiger Stadium; I was just in awe. I didn't make a commitment there though, and I am going to Miami this weekend."

Lavelle Hawkins, 5-11, 165, is gifted pass catcher with outstanding leaping ability and 4.41 speed. He is listed as the nation's No. 17 wide receiver by The Insiders and he's the highest rated wideout on UT's board. The Vols are still a contender for The Insiders No. 27 receiver, Eddie Royal of Chantilly, Va., but he has yet to make a visit and is believed to be leaning toward staying in his home state.

Of course, wide receiver isn't the concern for Tennessee it has been in recent recruiting classes as the Vols have a lot of youth and depth in its wideout corp.
