UT adds promising LB

<!--Default For Tennessee is to ignore-->Tennessee got good news from Hampton, Va., today, when one of the South's better linebacker prospects opted for the Vols.

''He committed to Tennessee,'' Jerod's brother Derron told Miller Safrit of TheInsiders.com.

Jerod Mayo, a 6-2, 214-pounder with 4.65 speed, picked the Big Orange over Virginia Tech and North Carolina State. He previously considered Virginia and Purdue.

Playing weakside linebacker for Kecoughtan High, Jerod record 92 solos and 118 assists as a senior, with 18 tackles for loss and six fumbles caused. He also intercepted two passes. Offensively, he rushed for 1,245 yards (9.0 yards per carry) and 11 touchdowns. As a junior, he registered 68 tackles, including 22 for minus yardage, with three sacks, four interceptions and five forced fumbles.

''I have a knack for finding the ball,'' he told TheInsiders.com. ''I make plays. I get off the edge good and also can drop into coverage. I'd like to have better 40 speed which would help me in man-to-man coverage. I could get more picks.''
