Stevens may renege, pick C-N

A Vol recruiting commitment may be read to renege and sign with Carson-Newman.

Demarcus Stevens, who prepped at Knoxville's Fulton High School, is a 6-3, 200-pound linebacker who appears unlikely to qualify for immediate eligibility at the Div. 1 level. Thus, if he signs with UT, he probably will have to attend two years of junior college before playing for the Vols.

Should Stevens sign with Carson-Newman, however, he would be immediately eligible. The Eagles have been recruiting him since his sophomore year of high school and reportedly offered Stevens a scholarship during his junior year.

Speculation on radio and message boards has Stevens signing with Carson-Newman instead of Tennessee. Rocky Top News profiled Stevens in its December issue, but our calls to Fulton High School's athletics offices were not returned.

If Stevens reneges, UT's linebacker haul will be reduced to James Turner (Augusta, Ark.) and Jerod Mayo (Hampton, Va.). As Signing Day approaches, however, the Vols were still in the hunt for three LBs -- Robert Ayers (Bennettsville, S.C.), Brian Toal (Wyckoff, N.J.) and Keith Boykins (Lovejoy, Ga.).
