Crompton postpones commitment

Heralded junior quarterback Jonathan Crompton has indefinitely postponed a Wednesday news conference to announce his college choice ... which may not be good news for Tennessee.

The Vols were widely considered to be the likely winner in the Crompton sweepstakes, so the delay could mean he is reconsidering. Then again, it might just mean he has a few details to iron out before he goes public.

Crompton, a 6-3 1/2, 191-pounder with 4.9 speed, will be one of America's most heavily recruited prospects next fall as a senior at Tuscola High of Waynesville, N.C.

Two weeks ago, Crompton told Don Callahan of Inside Carolina that ''Tennessee and North Carolina are about 50-50, while Virginia is right up there. Whenever it feels right I will commit. I couldn't give you a certain time, but it will probably be before my senior season starts.''

He and his parents recently made an unofficial visit to Chapel Hill, where they took in the UNC-UConn basketball game.

''It was great,'' Crompton said of the game. ''The crowd was into it the whole time. It was a great game. It was a great atmosphere there. I'm going to try to attend a basketball game at all the other schools I visit to try to get a feel for everything.''

Crompton is setting up an official visit to UT within the next couple of weeks and will also plan stops to Virginia and Clemson.
