Vols face young Hogs

Finally ... UT basketball coach Buzz Peterson gets to face a team whose lineup is even younger than his own.

The Vols field one of college hoops' greenest teams -- starting two juniors (Brandon Crump, Scooter McFadgon) and three sophomores (Jemere Hendrix, C.J. Watson and John Winchester).

Arkansas, which visits Thompson-Boling Arena Wednesday for an 8 p.m. tipoff, is even younger than the Big Orange. The Razorbacks start one junior (Matt Jones), one sophomore (Jonathon Modica) and three freshmen (Vincent Hunter, Ronnie Brewer, Olu Famutimi).

Though youthful, the Hogs are talented. Modica averages 16.5 points per game and the 6-7 Brewer averages 13 points, 6 rebounds and 3.4 assists per contest. Arkansas's record is just 11-9 overall and 3-6 in SEC play but the Hogs are progressing. They hammered visiting Auburn 74-52 last Wednesday.

''They have a very young ballclub,'' UT head man Buzz Peterson said this week. ''Brewer is having a good year for them. Vincent Hunter is a guy we recruited. Jones really amazes me -- a two-sport athlete (he also plays quarterback for the Arkansas football team) who plays well on the field and on the court. He's a very intelligent basketball player.''

Wednesday night's game will be televised by the Jefferson Pilot network.
